Our mission is to make the science of atmospheres, oceans, and planets visible, hands-on, and accessible to learners everywhere.

Making Earth and planetary science easier to see

DIYnamics creates affordable, hands-on tools for teaching how air, water, and other fluids move on Earth and throughout the solar system.

Our mission is to make geophysical fluid dynamics engaging, accessible, and easier to teach for learners of all ages—from elementary school students encountering Earth science for the first time to university students studying the physics of planets.

What is geophysical fluid dynamics?

Designed for classrooms and communities

Geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) is the study of how fluids move on Earth and other planets.

These fluids include:

  • Air in the atmosphere

  • Water in the oceans

  • Molten and liquid material inside planets

GFD helps us understand many of the systems that shape our world, including weather patterns, ocean currents, storms, climate, and the motion of planetary interiors.

Although these processes happen on enormous scales, many of them can be demonstrated with something much smaller: a rotating tank of water.

DIYnamics materials have been used in classrooms, laboratories, public demonstrations, and outreach events around the world.

Our experiments can be adapted for all ages and levels of experience. Younger students may explore how spinning water behaves, while advanced students can investigate the physical principles behind atmospheric circulation, ocean currents, and planetary dynamics.

Because our designs are rooted in a do-it-yourself philosophy, educators can build, adapt, and improve the equipment for their own teaching needs. The growing DIYnamics community shares ideas and helps bring rotating-tank science to new audiences.

Students do more than hear about planetary motion—they can see it, experiment with it, and ask questions about what happens.

DIYnamics develops affordable rotating-tank platforms, classroom experiments, and teaching resources that make these concepts visible and interactive. Our kits are designed to reduce the cost and technical barriers that can make hands-on GFD demonstrations difficult to bring into classrooms
